NEST or Sprouts? Choosing the Right R.A.D. Camp for Your 4-Year-Old
Four-year-olds have a useful choice at R.A.D. Camps. They fall within the age range for both R.A.D. NEST and R.A.D. Sprouts—but the two programs are intentionally different.
Both make outdoor free play central to the day. The decision is less about which program is “better” and more about which rhythm fits your child now.
NEST offers a gentler, more predictable introduction to camp, with half-day and full-day choices. Sprouts is a higher-energy, full-day experience with optional van adventures. This guide puts the differences side by side so you can choose with confidence.
Why Age Four Overlaps Both Programs
An age range tells you where to begin, but it does not describe every child’s camp style. One four-year-old may prefer a familiar sequence and shorter morning. Another may be eager for a full day with more movement and optional adventures.
That is why age four belongs in both programs:
R.A.D. NEST serves ages 3–4. Its day is paced specifically for young campers.
R.A.D. Sprouts serves ages 4–7. Its full-day format gives four-year-olds the chance to join a more active program alongside somewhat older campers.

Ages
NEST: ages 3–4.
Sprouts: ages 4–7.
Day length
NEST: half day, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM, or full day, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM.

Starting question
NEST: would my child benefit from a younger-group rhythm or half-day choice?
Sprouts: is my child ready for a more active full day and optional van experience?
These are guideposts, not labels. Think about the complete day rather than choosing from one personality trait.
Choose NEST for a Gentler, Predictable Rhythm
R.A.D. NEST follows a sequence young campers can learn: calm arrival, sensory play, outdoor discovery, a nature walk, creative activity, lunch, recharge time, and movement.
NEST may be the stronger fit when your four-year-old:
Is new to camp or group days away from home.
Benefits from knowing what comes next.
Enjoys sensory materials, nature walks, and focused creative play.
Would do best beginning with a half day.
Is ready for a group but still prefers a program paced for ages 3–4.
NEST campers must be fully toilet independent, able to settle after a normal drop-off, follow simple one- or two-step directions, and participate alongside other children. If those readiness questions are still on your mind, read Is My 3-Year-Old Ready for Summer Camp? A Parent’s Guide. The same practical checkpoints can help a family think through a four-year-old’s first camp experience.
The new single-day option also makes NEST easier to try. Families can choose a half day for $69 or a full day for $105. For the same camper, all five dates in the same week must be booked in one order to save $50 ($295 half day or $475 full day); separate orders do not qualify.
Choose Sprouts for a More Active Full Day
R.A.D. Sprouts is the next step for ages 4–7. It keeps outdoor free play at the center while offering a higher-energy, full-day format and optional van adventures.
Sprouts may be the stronger fit when your four-year-old:
Is comfortable with a full camp day.
Enjoys an active pace and moving between different experiences.
Is excited to spend the day with campers across the 4–7 age range.
Is comfortable with the idea of an optional van adventure.
Has enough group experience that a younger-camper rhythm is no longer necessary.
Choosing Sprouts does not mean a child has outgrown quiet moments, creative play, or support. It means the overall day has more energy and a wider age mix. Review the current Sprouts page with your child and notice what they understand and look forward to.
Questions That Make the Choice Clearer
How long a day feels comfortable?
If a full day away from home would be a large first step, NEST’s 9:00 AM–12:00 PM option provides a shorter camp experience. If your child already handles full group days comfortably, either NEST full day or Sprouts may work.
How does your child handle transitions?
NEST follows a predictable sequence paced for young campers. Sprouts is designed as a more active day. Think about whether your child enjoys settling deeply into a familiar rhythm or looks forward to changing activities and new experiences.
How does your child feel about a van adventure?
Optional van adventures are part of what distinguishes Sprouts. A child who is enthusiastic about that possibility may be pointing you toward Sprouts. A child who would rather stay with a campus-and-park rhythm may feel more at home in NEST.
Which peers feel like the better fit?
NEST’s age range is 3–4. Sprouts spans ages 4–7. Some four-year-olds feel most comfortable near the older end of a younger group; others are eager to join a program that includes older campers.
Does your child meet the NEST readiness requirements?
NEST requires independent toileting, the ability to settle after drop-off, simple direction-following, and participation in group play. Those requirements are practical and specific. If your child needs hands-on bathroom help or continuous one-on-one support through the day, NEST is not yet the right registration choice.
How to Choose Dates and Register
Start by using the R.A.D. Camps Camp Chooser for an age-based overview, then open both program pages and compare the current registration choices.
For NEST, choose the individual half-day or full-day dates that fit your family. You can begin with one day, select several days, or book all five dates within one week to receive the weekly price automatically.
For Sprouts, review the current program page and registration flow for the exact full-day details, then decide whether the optional van-adventure choices fit your camper.
You do not have to choose one program for the entire summer. Revisit the decision as your four-year-old becomes more familiar with camp.
The Best Fit Is the One Your Child Can Enjoy Now
Choose NEST when a gentle, predictable rhythm, younger age range, or half-day option will help your child participate comfortably. Choose Sprouts when your child is ready for a more active full-day experience and is interested in optional van adventures.
Whichever route you choose, the goal is the same: a day outside with room to play, explore, and build confidence through real experience. Review R.A.D. NEST, R.A.D. Sprouts, and the Camp Chooser, then select the day that feels like the right next step for your four-year-old.
